Nigel Lumb

My uncle Geoffery was a very competent photographer and as a small child in the 1960s I would spend hours in his dark room helping him print images. The “witchcraft” of the darkroom must have sown the seeds of what became a lifetime hobby. I got my first camera at age of 10 and when I started work, I saved up for some proper gear.

Learning from previous errors and experimentation is my chosen route for developing my approach. For me its hunting and capturing the image which gives me the greatest satisfaction. This helps to explain why street photography, landscapes and wildlife feature more than any other subjects

Very little of my photography is done indoors. I prefer mostly outside with available light, but I do occasionally use flash or continual light sources. I have attempted to present a collection of images on the Gamma Website that reflect northern England and Yorkshire specifically using a documentary approach.

Participating in exhibitions, producing books or having a personal website is not something that really interests me. I create images because I like, giving me satisfaction and greatly improves my wellbeing.

Infrared

Generally, I shoot at 720 or 850nm which give monochrome images. Most infrared images tend to be landscapes which suite the high contrast look which is achieved at these wavelengths.

Landscapes

No honey pot locations in this selection of images, it’s easy to get stunning images in a stunning landscape. I prefer to concentrate on local and infrequently shot locations. This gives a challenge and satisfaction when a pleasing image is created.

Street

Candid street photography creates a record of its time. I try to avoid the normal people doing normal things scenes. Hopefully looking for interest, storey telling and humour.

Wildlife

I often wonder if I am a nature lover that takes photographs or a photographer that takes wildlife photographs. On reflection I think I am a nature lover first and photographer second.
